As we were slowly transitioning into normalcy and into the post-Covid world by starting in-person classes up, we were interrupted with the rapid unfolding of Hurricane Ida. During the first week of class, it was nice to not only return to in-person classes but also to begin meeting my peers and faculty that I will get to know throughout the upcoming school year. The introduction of the course curriculum for the first few days helped me get excited to dive into Pharmacology. More specifically, during that first week, we had an introduction to the general principles and mechanisms that embody the majority of pharmacological processes. Like discusses in the first week, several enzymes and drug-receptor interactions were highlighted that would later form the basic foundation of pharmacological studies.
While most of us had to return home as a result of Hurricane Ida knocking out power through the greater New Orleans area, it definitely was considered to be an abrupt disruption in what was was being expected to be an exciting time. While I was not here during the storm and the two weeks that followed, the details behind the storms rampage was broadcasted over the national news. While it was easy for many others to watch the aftermath on their TVs in their houses, it probably hit home harder for me than it did for other since I am going on my fifth year in the area. As the city had began opening up again, it was nice to see the resiliency of the city staying strong. Seeing what was happening to many local had me eager to help in any way I could.
While we returned to online classes, I was excited to dive into more of the nitty-gritty of Pharmacology and begin learning about the specific drugs are administered for a variety of infections/diseases and these past two weeks have been exactly that! Discussing the mechanisms of action behind some anti-inflammatory medications that are almost always given to patients in hospitals really helped me gain an appreciation for this information and apply it to real-life situations. I am excited to continue out this year and to hopefully have it be a smooth and uninterrupted experience.
